Where are peristaltic pumps used in paper mills?

For this reason, peristaltic pumps are used in various sections of the production plant, from pulp preparation right through to water treatment systems. Unlike many other pumping technologies, peristaltic pumps have no mechanical seals, valves or impellers in contact with the product. This reduces maintenance requirements, particularly in applications where abrasive, viscous or particulate-laden fluids are pumped.

Key applications include the dosing of chemical additives, the transfer of adhesives and dyes, feeding pulp preparation systems, and the dosing of defoamers, flocculants and products used for the treatment of process water, including those containing solid particles.

What products are dosed during the production of paper and pulp?

Each paper mill uses different formulations depending on the type of paper produced and the process employed. Peristaltic pumps are commonly used for dosing products such as hydrogen peroxide, calcium sulphate, lime milk, defoamers, flocculants, binders, dyes and other additives used in paper and pulp production. The choice of pump and tubing material depends on the chemical compatibility of the fluid, the required flow rate and the operating conditions of the plant.

They can also be used for handling process water and waste water, even when the fluid contains suspended solid particles or has abrasive properties. Under these conditions, the peristaltic operating principle helps to reduce wear on the pump, as the fluid remains confined within the tube without ever coming into contact with the mechanical parts.

Each paper mill has different requirements depending on the type of paper produced, the substances used and the level of automation of the plant. Which tube should you choose for a peristaltic pump in the paper industry?

Where the process requires different properties, reinforced hoses made from EPDM, natural rubber and braided rubber are also available; these materials are suitable for applications involving fluids that are particularly aggressive, abrasive or containing solid particles.
